Ebook About For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.”As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin.A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.Book A Patriot's History of the United States: From Columbus's Great Discovery to America's Age of Entitlement, Revised Edition Review :
I just read this entire book for a high school class. On the positive side, it is an extremely comprehensive history of the U.S. from start to finish. On the negative side, it’s maybe too comprehensive (i.e. boring). I get that it’s history but if I hadn’t had to read it for a school, I would have clocked out after the first time the book started describing economic policies in minute detail. It’s also very biased, especially as it gets to more modern events, which is really saying something considering I mostly agree with the political leanings that the authors put forward. However, it’s a history book. It just doesn’t sit well with me to have political opinions injected into history, whether I agree with them or not.For example, the authors often use terminology that makes up your mind for you, when I would prefer to come to my own conclusions. For example, policies that the authors disagreed with were referred to as “fiascos” or “debacles” when they could have just been described plainly. If something is bad enough to be described like that, let the reader do the describing once they read the facts of the events. Additionally, when it came to most 20th century presidents, the bias was extremely obvious. Republican presidents were glorified and their mistakes mostly brushed over, and Democrat presidents were demonized and their gains were hardly mention. For example, the authors vilified Bill Clinton, stating at one point that “he admitted to smoking marijuana”. This is presented in a way that belittles Clinton. Later on, when describing George W. Bush, the authors nonchalantly admit that Bush had had a “wild youth” and had been a “regular partygoer” but then quickly go on to say that he sobered up and had a religious conversion.I just found this book really disappointing. It claims to be correcting “the doctrinaire biases that have distorted the way America’s past is taught”, but instead of giving readers a book of plain, simple facts (which is what I expect from a history book), it simply applies a bias that is opposite to the mainstream one. Comprehensive, well footnoted and researched. STAY AWAY from the American hatefest ZInn book - get this for a real educator's book. I have a huge library of history books - mostly WWII - and noticed that I did not have a good survey book to fill in the gaps of American history. This book is chronologically organized for easy reference and stays on the facts of history, rather than the controversy. A great reference for any historian. Highly recommended.
